SERVICE PROJECTS BY THE MERU ROTARIANS

(a) Economic and Community Development—Solidarity Table Banking Microcredit

Solidarity International Trust (SIT), in partnership with the Rotary Club of Meru, continues to provide more and more families with lifelines through a form of micro-credit program called “table banking.” To date, for example, the organization has supported more than 4000 families through this program. And out of that number, more than 500 families have benefited from the micro-businesses established through the help of SIT trainers. The money for loans is usually given to the group to give to its members based on the needs of each individual member. So far, the organization has trained over 350 groups in Meru, Isiolo, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, and Embu Counties. This consequently means that the organization requires more money to support these newly formed groups through boosting the groups’ earnings as well as recruiting and training new groups in entrepreneurship.

Rotary District 9212’s PDG Teshome Kabede visited the program in 2015 and remarked:

“I am extremely amazed by what I saw in the Solidarity House CBO where poverty alleviation was being practiced live through table banking…I am convinced the model practically addresses community’s challenges at household levels and eradicate poverty at country level.”
